Provincial Park
Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park is located along the Continental Divide by the Alberta and British Columbia borders approximately 48 kms southwest of Banff.
Mt. Assiniboine, popularly called “The Matterhorn of the Canadian Rockies” for its resemblance to the famous Swiss mountain, is a 3600m/11,870ft peak located in the southern end of the park. It is easily identified by its unique pyramid shape.
The park offers a wide array of trails and backcountry camping sites complimented by endless kms of trails that vary from easy to difficult for backpackers and rock climbers alike. Prime time for hiking is from late June to late September, late August onward if you want to miss the bug season.
There is a lot of planning to go into this trip, but it will be an experience to remember for the rest of your life. Plan a year ahead of time, and plan well. The resources for doing that are here.
Best Hiking Trails of Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park
Be aware of the shifting weather conditions that can prove dangerous and dress appropriately, especially at night with temperatures as low as -15c in early Spring and late Fall.
Accessible by hiking or helicopter.

Hiking Access can take an experienced well equipped hiker between 7 to 10 hours. Be fully prepared with the proper clothing, First Aid Kits and Bear Spray. You’re on your own out here. Hiking alone is not advisable.

Mount Assiniboine Lodge is a wonderful fully restored rustic lodge located at the base of Mount Assiniboine overlooking majestically colored turquoise lakes surrounded by brilliant wildflower meadows.
Naiset Huts are 5 one room log huts, located by the shores of Lake Magog at the base of Naiset Peak. 5 to 8 people can stay per hut.
Make reservations early.
Hind Hut is a hut on the accession of Mount Assiniboine. This hut is for climbers only, not hikers and should only be accessed by seasoned climbers during the best of conditions.
