Safety In The Mountains

Safety in the mountains must start with you. Before entering the backcountry be aware of the conditions. Be sure that you will be capable of safely navigating the mountains for an extended time, even if you are only planning for a short period of time.

The key is to be prepared for whatever may arise, whether that is injury, getting lost, the terrain itself, having the right clothing and footwear, safety gear, water filtration kits, communications gear, wildlife encounters, avalanche, and sudden weather changes.

Parks Canada Mountain Safety Program has some great information including emergency contact info. Be sure to check out the Search and Rescue section.
